Don Maurer Keynote Speaker for ND’s First Annual Queen of Victory Event

Don Maurer, 1974 graduate of Notre Dame, will be the keynote speaker for the Queen of Victory Evening of Excellence. This event, to take place on August 10 at the high school, is the school’s first event to honor athletic and performing & visual arts hall of fame inductees, Bob Miller Award recipients and the NDHS Foundation’s Annunciation Award.

Maurer has a long history with Notre Dame. During his time as a bulldog, he was active in Student Council, performing arts and athletics. He spent two years in Notre Dame’s band and three years participating in the spring musical. He played varsity baseball, track & field, and basketball, earning all-state honorable mention for basketball in 1974. Maurer received the Bulldog Award his senior year.

After high school, Maurer went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Southeast Missouri State University. He later received a Master of Arts in Athletic Administration from the University of Illinois.

Maurer had a 43-year career in education, with a six-year stint at Notre Dame teaching physical education and health, and serving as the head basketball coach and athletic director. He spent two years at the University of Illinois as an assistant basketball coach under Lou Henson. After that, Maurer went on to coach basketball at St. Louis University High for 14 seasons.

In 2001, Maurer began his tenure at Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School (MICDS). There, he was the head basketball coach and taught physical education for five years, followed by nine years as the athletic director.

After leaving MICDS in 2015, Maurer worked as an assistant executive director for MSHSAA, serving as the administrator for cross country, track & field, speech & debate, and coordinator of basketball officials. He also spent six years on the MSHSAA Board of Directors.

Maurer has been recognized for his significant contributions to athletics in the state. He was named Missouri Basketball Coach of the Year in 2002, and inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006. He is a member of both the Notre Dame (2003) and MICDS (2022) halls of fame. Additionally, the MICDS Holiday Basketball Tournament is now named the Don Maurer Invitational Tournament.

Maurer is married to Marla Glass Maurer, a 1976 Notre Dame graduate. They have two children, Jessica and Nathan, and two grandchildren, Bentley and Brooklyn. Now enjoying retirement, the Maurers live in south St. Louis County and love to spend time with family and play golf.
